If necessary, their diets can be supplemented with chopped squid or pellets. As a true scavenger, the Peppermint Shrimp will consume leftover meaty foods and pellets and aiptasia as well as feeding off the fish that they clean. The invasive aiptasia has few natural predators so a relatively small, reef safe, colourful invertebrate who will help manage it is a welcome addition to a home aquarium. What separates the Peppermint Shrimp from all other cleaner shrimps is its willingness to consume aiptasia. While they sometimes display this type of behaviour in a home aquarium they are not as reliable cleaners as the Scarlet Skunk Cleaner shrimp. Since it is a cleaner shrimp, it will sometimes set up a cleaning station where, in exchange for an easy meal, the Peppermint Shrimp will clean parasites and dead tissue off of reef fish. In the wild they are most often found in the caves and crevices of the reef, which they use as a homebase for their tireless scavenging of the reef in search of meaty foods. The Peppermint Shrimp is found on coral reefs of the Caribbean and the Florida coast. It is sometimes confused with the camel shrimp, which is native to Indonesia. Its legs and antennae also tend to be a darker shade of red. This shrimp has a pinkish body with dark red and white stripes running laterally. They are also less excitingly known as the Caribbean Cleaner Shrimp or the Veined Shrimp. The newly hatched shrimp larvae are great food for corals and small fish.With its red and white body reminiscent of a candy cane, the Peppermint Shrimp is aptly named. It is not uncommon for peppermint shrimp to spawn when kept in groups of 2 or more. The Peppermint Shrimp is non-aggressive with fish and other invertebrates, and groups of them can cohabitate peacefully in the same reef aquarium. During the day the shrimp will generally hide in live rock and come out at night to forage for food. In a reef system, the shrimp can control the spread of aptaisia by eating the small, developing anemones. The Peppermint Shrimp is famous for eating the nuisance Aiptasia anemone. Suggest you just go ahead and do the Puffer and kill Aiptasia with Kalk paste. It is also a scavenger sifting sand for food and promoting a healthier aquarium. Only peppermint shrimp can get to those holes and totally eradicate the Aiptasia. It is a cleaner shrimp, meaning it cleans the parasites off its tankmates. The Peppermint shrimp serves two important functions in a reef system. This attractive shrimp is named for the red stripes running the length of its transparent to cream-colored body. The name Peppermint Shrimp applies to a variety of Lysmata species that are distributed along the Eastern Seaboard, Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean. Peppermint shrimp (Lysmata wurdemanni) is the first choice when it comes to choosing Aipstasia-eating shrimp, this shrimp is small, has a transparent reddish. While these shrimps do share some similarities, they are two distinct species that have differences you should be aware of.
